Urban Augustine Panther, 95, of West Point, Iowa passed away at 1:15 p.m. Friday, December 7, 2012 peacefully in the Hospice Unit of the West Point Care Center with family at his side.
Born May 6, 1917 in Lee County, Iowa, the son of Benedict and Elizabeth (Menke) Panther. He married Bertha Pulskamp on June 21, 1949 in Hillsboro, North Dakota.
Urban was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the West Point Knights of Columbus. The day of Urban’s eighth grade graduation he went straight home, changed his clothes, hitched up the horses and went to work on his father’s farm. With the exception of a five year period in Mayville, North Dakota, Urban spent the rest of his career farming in Lee County, Iowa. It was in Mayville, while working as a mechanic, that he met Bertha Pulskamp. The two were married and raised ten children together. Urban was an avid reader and an exceptional wit. Beyond his expertise in farming, Urban enjoyed tasteful experiments while cooking, brewing and vinting.
Survivors include his wife Bertha of West Point, Iowa; five sons Jim (Norma) Panther of Iowa City, Iowa, Bob (Joanne) Panther of Grand Forks, North Dakota, Mark (Teresa) Panther of West Point, Iowa, Joe (Chris) Panther of Fort Madison, Iowa and Greg (Tammy) Panther of Keokuk, Iowa; four daughters Becky De Pauw of Davenport, Iowa, Mary (Kevin) Overton of West Point, Iowa, Janet Panther of Cumming, Georgia and Mindy Robey of West Point, Iowa; one daughter-in-law Julie Panther; two AFS daughters Jaqueline (Peralta) Fernandez of the Dominican Republic and Ingrid Tilmes of Germany; nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; four sisters Rita (Elmer) Steffensmeier of Fort Madison, Iowa; Agnes Miller of Columbus, Nebraska, Martha Dohman of West Point, Iowa and Carol (Ron) Fullenkamp of West Point, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son John; one infant son; two brothers and two sisters.
