Helen Anna Poole
Helen Anna Poole was born Dec. 24, 1917 in Ardoch, North Dakota to Julian and Rose (Osowski) Gierszewski. She was the youngest of six children. As a young girl she preferred spending her time outside, rather than helping in the house. Helen and William Poole were married February 12, 1934 in Drayton, North Dakota. They farmed in Walsh County and started their family. Although she only attended school through the seventh grade, Helen quickly learned to manage a house, care for children, and to bake bread! In 1945 Helen, Bill and 8 children moved to Warroad where they owned the Town Tavern. As more children came into the Poole house, on the corner of Lake Street, Helen’s time outside was spent gardening, picking berries, and her annual “girls time out” spent with her sister working in the potato harvest each fall! Helen worked at the tavern and at the Thermolite plant while living in Warroad. Eventually there were 16 children to be fed, clothed and nurtured. When asked how she did it, she would often say, “They all pitched in.” They learned many skills from her – tending to babies, doing laundry (without a dryer), budgeting, the importance of sharing and that Church and family should be top priorities. Helen was a lifelong Catholic and this faith gave her strength throughout her life.
In 1966, Helen and Bill moved to Oxnard, California. Helen worked for Abex Corp. for 16 years. For awhile, retirement was difficult for Helen – she had never had the opportunity to develop hobbies! But she did eventually have many wonderful years of retirement. She traveled often and far, visiting children and grandchildren across the United States, eastern Canada and Germany. She loved bingo, card games and playing a dice game. Meeting each new member of the family brought her joy. Special treats she liked were Sees candy and a meal from Taco Bell. Helen continued to bake bread in the Senior Apt. where she lived– always 11 loaves! Family and friends were eager to receive her gift of bread.
Helen became a resident of the Warroad Senior Living Center in July 2011. She continued to enjoy family, bingo, playing cards and attending church. Helen died on Nov. 24, 2012 in Warroad.
She is survived by 13 children; 46 grandchildren; 81 great grandchildren and 8 great great grandchildren.
