Mitchell John Shegrud

An amazing and loving man lost his battle with neuroendocrine cancer on September 10, 2012. Mitchell John Shegrud, age 61, of Bagley, Minnesota died at home with family surrounding him.

He was born in Bagley to parents Dudley Victor Shegrud and Norma Iona (Brantsner) Shegrud. Mitch grew up in the Minerva area and attended Minerva school and Bagley High school, graduating in 1969. He married Dawn LaVine and they had three children. He later married Carol (King) Miller. This marriage produced two children and gained him four step-children.

Mitch owned his own business, Shegrud Backhoe Service, and was well known in the area for his designs and installation of septic systems, road-building , and many other projects. He had a gift for inventions and built many tools and machines. Mitch was the “go to” person for many people, always ready to help out in any emergency.

Mitch will be remembered for his mechanical abilities, but also for his tender heart and loving nature. He enjoyed a good joke, and he loved to spend time with his family. Mitch played golf as time allowed during his busy summer months.

He was a strong believer in God, and he was at peace with his cancer diagnosis, saying: “When I go to sleep I will wake up in the arms of Jesus”. He didn’t want to leave this earth, but he knew heaven was a reality and would be welcoming him home.

Mitch donated his body to the University of Minnesota for research on his rare form of cancer. He wanted to help others even in death.

Mitch is survived by his wife of almost 30 years, Carol; his children Mitchell, Jr. (Charlotte) and their son, Michael; Darby (Julie) and their children Jalen and Kierra; Erin Shegrud and her children Jordan and JeRae; Holly Jones (Gene) and children Dominic and Hazel; Noah (Yvonne) and their children Tipton and Arian and baby due February, 2013. He is also survived by his step-children (children of his heart) Richard Miller and his daughter, Lindsey; Alisa (Pat) McNallan and their children Connor, Sarah, Isaac, John, Jack and Zoe; Carrie (Michael) Stevens and children Gabriella, Rayna, Abraham and Josef; Paul Miller (Chrissy) and children Echo, Talia, Roxy and Sinjin. He is also survived by his father, Dudley and siblings Doreen Smith (Gerald), DeeAnn Jessee (Bob), Troy (Bobbi) and Owen (Connie) as well as several nieces, nephews, uncles, aunt, and cousins and one great- grandson.

He was preceded in death by his mother in 2002; granddaughter Alexandra Miller in 2001, and brother-in-law Stanley Syverson in 1994.

A celebration of his life will be held at Grace Chapel, Bagley, (10 miles south of Bagley on Highway 92) on September 29 at 2:00 P.M.
