Joann Slominski
Joann Slominski, age 88, of Warsaw, ND, entered into heaven peacefully on Thursday, September 13, at Lutheran Sunset Home in Grafton, ND, surrounded by her loving family.
Joann was born on January 8, 1924. She was one of 19 children born into the family of Joseph and Martha (Stoltman) Ebertowski, which is recorded as possibly the largest family in Walsh County.
As her extensive family moved from the area she kept in close contact with all and was one of the favorite aunties of her many nephews and nieces.
Joann was united in marriage to Steven M. Slominski on November 24, 1942 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Warsaw, ND, and they celebrated 63 years together before Steve passed away in 2006.
In their early years, Steve and Joann spent summers farming near Alvarado, MN, and would head to Detroit, MI, and Elgin, IL to seek winter employment. One of Joann's jobs included working at a 9mm ammunition factory during the war years. She often referred to herself as a real "Rosie the Riveter".
In the early 1950's, Joann and Steve settled on their farmstead in Pulaski Township and continued farming there until retiring in 1977 when they built a new home in Warsaw, ND.
After retiring, winters were spent with Steve behind the wheel of their motorhome and Joann as his co-pilot. They traveled from coast to coast until settling in Surprise, AZ in 1992, and continuing until this past winter.
Cooking for family and friends was one of Joann's greatest joys. She loved to host gatherings both big and small. She was proud of her Polish heritage and combined these two pleasures by cooking many traditional Polish dishes.
Joann's devotion to her Catholic Faith was evident to all. She was a lifelong member of the Alter Society, Sacred Heart Society, Living Rosary, and the St. Stanislaus Choir.
Joann is survived by her sons: LeRoy of Porter Ranch, CA, Kenneth (Diane), and Darrell of Warsaw, ND. Grandchildren: Michael and Brian Slominski, Kristin (Jason) Zilka, Karlynn Slominski, Kameron (Mandy) Slominski, Jill (Bryan) Hurst, Amy Slominski, and Steven Slominski. Great Grandchildren: Sarah, Emily, Rachel, and Jacob Zilka, Rylan Von Rueden, Kenady Slominski, Gaven Cleaver, Emma and Ethan Hurst, and Joslyn Kalbrener, sisters: Mary Ann Sevigny, Grafton, ND; Evelyn Marshall, Lakewood, CA.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Steve, daughter Geralyn, 7 brothers and 9 sisters.
Visitation will take place on Monday, September 17, 2012 at Tollefson Funeral home, Grafton, ND, from 5:00-7:00 pm with a prayer service at 7:00pm.
Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Warsaw, ND, at 10:30am.
Interment will be at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.
