Glenn O. Schmitt, 86, Manvel, ND passed away on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at home.
Glenn O. Schmitt was born on June 17, 1926 the son of Ervin and Esther (Chartrant) Schmitt in Bentley, Michigan. His family moved to North Dakota when he was a small child and farmed west of Grand Forks. In 1944 he moved with his parents, brothers and sisters to the family farm northwest of Manvel where he worked with his family on the farm. Glenn married Virginia I. Brown on May 20, 1949 in the Zion Congregational Church in Manvel. Glenn and Virginia moved to California in 1949 and for a short while they lived in Palacido, CA and later moved to Shasta, CA in 1953. Later that year, they returned to Manvel where they lived the rest of their lives.
Glenn was a long time employee of Peterson Construction of Grand Forks where he worked as a crane operator and was a many decade member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local #49. Glenn retired in September of 1991. In May of 2009, Glenn and Virginia were able to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary together. Virginia preceded him in death on October 11, 2011.
Glenn was a good mechanic and enjoyed working in his garage. He truly enjoyed playing pinochle with family and friends. By far, Glenn's greatest love and pride was his grandchildren.
He is survived by his son Daniel (Janet) Schmitt, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Charles (Judy Miska - fiancé), James and Wendy; sisters, Delores (William) Ucinski, San Antonio, TX, Clare Udenby, Tillamook, OR, Patricia (Robert) Hoop, Jackson, MI and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; a son, Charles Schmitt; his parents; brothers, John Schmitt, Ervin Jr. Schmitt, Lawrence Schmitt and Raymond Schmitt; sisters, Myna McIntyre and Leila Lund.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012 in Zion Congregational Church, Manvel, ND.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service in Norman Funeral Home, 2950 S. Washington St., Grand Forks. Visitation will continue for one hour prior the funeral in the church on Saturday.
Burial: 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND.
