Gary Neil Ulland, 66, of Rice Lake, WI died Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Rochester Methodist Hospital. He was born July 13, 1946 in Mayville, ND to Orville and Clarice (Hoppe) Ulland. He was raised in the Red River Valley and graduated from Mentor High School in 1964. He attended the University of North Dakota, then entered the US Army, serving in Japan for 3 years. He was married in Erskine, MN on September 11, 1970 to Rena Johnston. They lived in Thief River Falls for 7 years, during which time he worked at Northwestern Hospital in the Physical Therapy Dept. In 1978, they moved to Minot, ND, and he began driving "Big Trucks," for Transport, Inc. In 1994, they moved to Rice Lake, WI, and he drove long haul for MTS of Wilson, WI. He retired in 2011. Gary had an avid interest in history, the military and conservative politics. He loved children, especially his grandsons. An active man, Gary loved to motorcycle, bowl, waterski, landscape, rollerblade, play hockey and roadtrip the U.S. He enjoyed reading and film. He loved his church and church family. Gary was a quiet man, and a great listener.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Rena of Rice Lake, WI; his sons, Dr. Denver (Priscilla) Ulland of Duluth, MN; Dr. Erik (Melanie) Ulland of Milwaukee, WI; 4 grandsons, Dayton, Dalton, Stellan and Esven Ulland; his sister, Sandra (Keith) Fontaine of Mentor, MN; many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Burial with military honors will in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans' Memorial Cemetery - Spooner, WI.
Services were held Monday, August 13 in Wisconsin.
