Dorothy M. Johnson, 76, Grand Forks formerly of Harvey, died Monday May 28, 2012 at her home in Grand Forks.

Dorothy was born on October 28, 1935 on the family farm in Benson County near Wellsburg, ND. She was the daughter of Frank and Magdalena (Hager) Thomas. She grew up on the family farm and attended grade school in East Fork Township in Benson County. She graduated from BCATS (Benson County Agricultural Training School) at Maddock, ND in 1953. Dorothy attended Aakers Business College for one year after graduation. She worked at the Harvey Herald as a bookkeeper. Dorothy married Darwin Johnson on August 11, 1955 at Selz. They lived in Harvey. He died on March 25, 1972. She worked for Otter Tail Power Company in Harvey, moved to Rugby in 1974 and continued to work for Otter Tail Power. In 1982 she moved to Grand Forks. She worked a variety of jobs, most recently for the Salvation Army Thrift Store. She also worked in concessions at the Alerus and Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Dorothy enjoyed cooking, baking and entertaining. She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, ceramics and transporting her grandchildren to their sporting events and attending them. Her great enjoyment was attending her grandchildren's sporting events.

She is survived by three sons, Kenny (Renee), Tonopah, AZ; Terry (Patty), Stanton, ND; Clyde (Candy), Grand Forks; five daughters Debbie (Dan) Grinde, West Fargo; Cindy (George) Balanon, Avondale, AZ; Kathy (Dave) LaDouceur; Diane (Jeff) Girodat, both of Grand Forks; Becky (Kevin) Knodel, Cleveland, ND; eleven grandchildren, Travis and Chase Slama, Jennifer (Christopher) Romine, Jonathan and Jessica LaDouceur, Tyler, Ashley and Chelsey Girodat, Brittany, Brock and Eric Knodel; great-granddaughter, Kenzie Romine; sister, Agnes (Gene) Dyste, Churchs Ferry, ND.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband; six brothers, Leo, Leonard, Frank, Conrad, Michael, and Sebastian Thomas; three sisters, Mary Richter, Anna Gisi, and Ludvinia Wack.

Prayer services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday May 31, 2012 at the Salvation Army Church, 1600 University Avenue, Grand Forks.

The funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. Friday June 1, 2012 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Harvey with burial following in St. Cecilia Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hertz Funeral Home on Friday and one hour prior to the services at both churches.
