Kenneth Arnold Wiese

Kenneth Arnold Wiese, 71, of Hallock, Minn., passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 18, 2012 at Sanford Health in Fargo, N.D. after a courageous battle with ALS.

Ken was born November 2, 1940, at Hallock, Minn. to Arnold and Violet (Schwenzfeier) Wiese. As a youth, he was active in 4-H, enjoyed gatherings of family and friends, appreciated the outdoors and found machinery fascinating. Ken graduated from Humboldt High School in 1958 and attended Moorhead State University. He then served two years in the United States Army before returning to Humboldt to begin a lifelong farming career. Over the next 45 years, Ken farmed with his father, Arnold, and uncles, Alvin and Earl; then farmed in partnership with his brother, James; and finally farmed with sons, Mark and Neil.

On November 12, 1966, he married Kathryn Milne at St. Andrews United Church in Emerson, Manitoba, Canada. Ken and Kathy raised their three sons on the farm near Humboldt and later moved to Hallock, Minn. in 2005.

Ken was active in various community and church organizations. He served 21 combined years on the school boards of the Humboldt-St. Vincent and Kittson Central districts and 30 years on the Humboldt-St. Vincent Elevator Association board. He was a lifelong member of Grace Lutheran Church in Hallock.

Ken enjoyed learning about and sharing farming stories with anyone he met. He was a devoted husband and an excellent role model for his children and grandchildren, teaching them about both farming and life in general. Attending the boys' activities in sports, music, school and church was a priority for him. Visits with his grandchildren were always a highlight and brightened his days. His guidance and presence will be greatly missed.

Ken is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Kathy; three sons, Mark (Lori) Wiese of Humboldt, Minn., David (Christine) Wiese of Slinger, Wis., and Neil (Renae) Wiese of Humboldt, Minn.; five grandchildren, Alyssa, Ian, Avery, Isaac, and Aidan; two sisters, Katherine (Rev. Dennis) Maaske, Omaha, Neb., Carolyn (Wendell) Wilson, Tucson, Ariz., and brother, James (Mary) Wiese, Humboldt, Minn.; as well as nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and his father-in-law, Ian Milne.

Funeral services are scheduled for Monday, April 23, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. in Grace Lutheran Church at Hallock.

Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Hallock.

Visitation will be held at Grace Lutheran Church on Sunday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m.

The Austin Funeral Home of Hallock is in charge of arrangements.

Kathy, Mark, David, Neil and families... I am so sorry to hear of Ken's death way too early in his wonderful life. Our family agrees that Ken was one of the nicest people on this earth. May God grant to you his peace, love, and patience for the days to come when great memories will bring smiles and laughter. Then you will say, "We were so lucky to have our time together!" May God Bless You...Anita Haller

Kathy, I'm so sorry to read of the passing of Kenneth. Your gentle spirit will survive. If you're like me, you might be tempted to be thinking that everything has changed, but give yourself time to realize that almost everything has not changed. Your love for Kenneth is strong, your family is intact, your friends will support you, you have work to do and you have decades too rediscover joy. Mark E Olson
