F. Duane Herrala, age 81, of Apache Junction, Arizona, formerly of Rolla, ND passed away on March 27, 2012 at Hospice of the Valley, Mesa, Arizona.
F. Duane Herrala passed away on March 27, 2012 at the age of 81 years old. He was born on his grandparents' farm near Hansboro, ND on April 27, 1930. He was raised on the family farm and attended Rolla High School, graduating in 1947. After high school, he attended the University of North Dakota for one year and graduated from Minot State Teacher's College. He spent two years in the Air Force as an Educational Specialist and was discharged honorably as 2nd Lieutenant in 1953. He was united in marriage to Aileen Fagerlund in 1953 while he was superintendent of Hansboro Public School. In 1955, Duane, Aileen and their newborn son, Brett, moved to Marysville, California where Duane continued his teaching career in both the Marysville and Grimes schools. Upon his fathers death in 1958, the family returned to the farm in North Dakota, farming until 1963, when Duane accepted the position of Elementary Principal with Rolla Public Schools. In 1968, he moved to Grand Forks and began working for Kem Temple of the Shrine as Executive Secretary, retiring in 1980. Duane and Aileen moved to Apache Junction, Arizona after retirement and enjoyed 31 years together in the desert. Duane especially loved hiking and the Superstition Mountains, as well as landscaping and desert gardening. They returned to Lake Upsilon, North Dakota every summer.
Duane is survived by his wife of 58 years, Aileen of Apache Junction, AZ; son, Brett and companion Loree Lovdahl of Phoenix, AZ and daughter Kathleen Herrala of Edina, MN. Also surviving are his loving grandchildren, Lyndsay Trader, Cara (Eric) Mehr, Ricky Fields and Tommy Fields.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents.
A Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Tuesday, April 10, 2012 at Elick Funeral Home, Rolla, ND with a Prayer Service at 7 PM.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 10:30 AM at the Rolla Presbyterian Church, Rolla, ND with Pastor Trudy Dumont officiating.
Burial will follow at the Rolla City Cemetery.
