Muriel I. Saumur

Muriel I. Saumur, 90, long-term Grand Forks, ND resident died March 30, 2012, at Rosewood Estate in Roseville, MN.

Muriel Inez Saumur (nee Cleary), was born April 12th, 1921 in Walhalla, ND to parents John and Catherine (Cary) Cleary. She was the ninth of ten children in her family and was the last survivor. She moved with her family to Grand Forks in 1929. She was educated in grade schools in Walhalla and Grand Forks. She attended St. James High School, and graduated from Grand Forks Central in 1938. She attended The University of North Dakota as a freshman in 1938/39, but left school to earn enough money to finance her second year, working as a bookkeeper at Dakota Auto in Grand Forks. During this hiatus, she began dating Robert Saumur, also of Grand Forks. She decided to defer her education in order to marry Bob, which she did in 1941 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Grand Forks. They had six children, all of whom survive her. During her child-rearing years she was an active Girl Scout leader, member of St. Michael’s Altar Society, and volunteer at St. Michael’s Grade School where she worked in the office and library. In 1976, at the age of 55, she resumed her education at UND and graduated with honors in 1983.

Nearly 64 years after their marriage, Bob passed away in Grand Forks in 2005. Shortly thereafter, Muriel moved to the Twin Cities to be nearer to 3 of her children who live in that area.

Survivors include children, Maureen (Fred) Harms, Hampton, VA, Robert Jr. (Sue), Coon Rapids, MN, Elizabeth Church, Seattle, WA, Margaret (Don) Strom, Shoreview, MN, Anne Saumur (David Kerr), Denver, CO and Kate Saumur, St. Paul, MN, as well as 10 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
