Sharlene Kaye Sprenger, 55, Bismarck, ND, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on February 29, 2012, after battling for more than six years with ovarian cancer.
Shar was born July 14, 1956 to Walter and Ann (Strand) Kusler in Ellendale, ND. She was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, and grandmother. Shar grew up on the family farm near Kulm, ND and graduated from Kulm High School in 1974. She graduated from Bismarck Junior College with a degree in Medical Secretarial. She also graduated from Northwest Technical College in East Grand Forks, MN as a Health Unit Coordinator. She was a medical receptionist, secretary, ward clerk, and health unit coordinator for clinics and hospitals in Bismarck, Jamestown, Grand Forks, and Minot, ND. She also was a bank cashier while living in Germany.
Sharlene married Morris Sprenger on November 10, 1979 at Kulm Congregational Church in Kulm, ND. They lived in Jamestown; Fort Belvoir, VA; Wildflecken, West Germany; Aberdeen, SD; Huron, SD; Grand Forks, ND; Minot, and Bismarck. Together they were blessed with children, Christopher and Kayla. Shar loved traveling throughout Europe and the US. After her cancer diagnosis, they continued to travel to both coasts, Canada, and Mexico. She also loved quilting, crafts, cooking, and spending time with family and friends. During her first series of chemotherapy treatments, despite her discomforts, Shar hand stitched a queen-size quilt still in use today. She had a resilient spirit as shown through her continuous smile even as she went through cancer treatments for five years.
She is survived by Morris, her loving husband of 32 years; son Christopher (Kari), Warroad, MN; daughter Kayla, Fargo, ND; mother Ann Kusler, Kulm; brother Wayne (Susan) Kusler, Kulm; brother Neil (Rachel) Kusler, Breckenridge, MN; aunt Louise Stofferahn, Oakes, ND; and granddaughters JoyDell and Ruthann Sprenger. Additionally, she is survived by her extended family: Marcella and Mark Sommer, Harvey, ND; Inez and Willard Rose, Minot; Richard Sprenger, Anamoose, ND; and other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Sharlene was preceded in death by her father Walter, and her grandparents.
Services will be held at 10:30 am Monday, March 5, at McCabe United Methodist Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Rick Fossum officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 pm Sunday, March 4, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7 pm.
