During the cold Grand Forks winters, she and Tom retreated to their home in sunny Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Joan was a devout Roman Catholic and a past member of the Altar Societies of St. Mary's, Holy Family, and St. Michael's Churches.
