Marton Spies, 95, Fargo, ND, died on Sat. Dec. 31, 2011 in Manorcare Health Services, Fargo, ND.
Marton Albertine Rousseau was born on Sept. 11, 1916 to Ralph and Lyda (Nicholson) Rousseau in Estherville, IA. She grew up and graduated in 1934 from Estherville High School. Marton then attended the American Institute of Business in Des Moines, IA. She worked at the Iowa state capitol as a secretary. She married Kurt Spies on Aug. 30, 1937 in Estherville. They then lived in Graettinger, IA and also San Diego, CA. In 1952, they moved to Hope, ND, where they owned and operated the Hope Creamery. They were in business until their retirement in 1978. Mr. Spies died on March 15, 2007. She moved to Bethany Retirement Living in 2008.
Marton was a member of the United Church of Hope and its women's group, Life member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Hope and a Steele County Representative of Silver Hair Legislature. She was a member of the Hope Library Board and volunteered many hours at the library.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters.
She is survived by son, Terry (Doris) Spies, West Fargo, ND; daughter, Susan (Bruce) Fagerholt, Hoople, ND; grandchildren, Melissa (Ryan) Kellerman, West Fargo, ND, Major Karen (Ralph) Radka, Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX, Tom (Leslie) Fagerholt, Hoople, ND, Jim (Jamie) Fagerholt, East Grand Forks, MN; great grandchildren, Madison and Brady Kellerman, Meredith and Joshua Radka and Milla Fagerholt; brother-in-law, Richard Spies, San Marino, CA; several nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Tuesday from 5 to 7 in West Funeral Home, West Fargo and one hour before the service in the chapel.
Memorial Service: Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012 at 2 pm in the Mavis Whiting Chapel of Bethany Homes, Fargo, ND.
Burial: Riverside Mausoleum, Fargo, ND.
