Darleen M. Shelquist, age 59 of Eagan, MN and formerly of Minto, ND passed away on Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the Regions Hospital of St. Paul, MN.
Darleen M. Shelquist was born July 7, 1952 in Fosston, MN to Henning and Alice (Wilson) Shelquist. Darleen was co-salutatorian of the Minto High School Class of 1970. She attended Lake Region Community College in Devils Lake, ND and graduated from the University of North Dakota with a Bachelor's Degree in Education (Speech Pathology & Audiology). She began her teaching career in Newport, WA and obtained her Master in Arts Degree (Communication Disorders) from Washington State University while continuing to work. She joined the Burnsville and Apple Valley School Districts in 1978 and continued to teach there until retiring in June of 2011.
She was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church in Minto, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and Education Minnesota. Darleen enjoyed visiting with family and friends, traveling, teaching and working with children, playing solitaire, shopping, and collecting antique furniture, teapots and dolls. She was an avid Minnesota Twins fan and enjoyed attending school sporting events of her family and students. The use of her stop watch for teaching speech also came in handy when she would time swim and track meets at school.
Darleen is survived by her mother Alice, sisters: Barbara (Gary) Schultz, Jane (Chris) Misialek and Faye, (Don) Schanilec, nephew Jared (Kyla) Schultz, nieces: Alicia Schultz and Erin Misialek all of Minto, ND. She was preceded by her father Henning.
Funeral services will be Friday, December 16, 2011 at 10:30 A.M. at Knox Presbyterian Church, Minto, ND.
Visitation will be Thursday from 5-7 with a prayer service at 5:30 pm at Tollefson Funeral Home, Grafton, ND. Friends may also call at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service.
Interment will be at the Minto City Cemetery.
