Herbert L.R. Woods, age 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Lutheran Memorial Homes in Mayville, North Dakota.

Herbert L.R. Woods, age 86, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at Lutheran Memorial Homes in Mayville, North Dakota.

Herbert was born April 9, 1925, in the town of Little Rock, Arkansas, to the late Elfanzo Woods and Ester Thomas. He later moved to Chicago, Illinois to live with his late aunt Cecil Kinnard, where he attended high school. In the 1950's, Herbert worked for the Ford Motor Company. He also served in the U.S. Army, during WW II, and the Vietnam War. He was later stationed in Germany where he was united in marriage to Laura Schmid on March 6, 1970. In 1994, Herbert and Laura moved from Germany to the Grand Forks, North Dakota to be close to their daughter and her family. Herbert and Laura became members of Holy Family Parish in 1995. Herbert was also a member of the Disabled Veterans of America (DAV). He enjoyed watching and playing tennis, he enjoyed reading, listening to jazz and loved to dance.

Herbert is survived by his wife, Laura; his two sons, Raimund Reichelt and Heinz Schmid; his daughter and her husband, Elvira and Clint Bell; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons; two sisters and two brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial: 1:30 p.m. Saturday, November 12, 2011 in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.

Visitation: One hour prior to the liturgy in the Church on Saturday.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND.

Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817, Disabled American Veterans and the North Dakota National Guard.
