Elsie Miller, 89, of St. Petersburg, Florida passed away on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2011 at Lexington Rehabilitation Center in St. Petersburg.
Elsie was born Sept. 20, 1922 in Hillsboro, North Dakota, daughter of Helmer and Emily Larson. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1940. She then moved to Leavenworth, Kansas where she was office manager for Campbell Brothers. She married Warren E. Miller of Ferrisburg, Vermont on Feb. 14, 1945 in Leavenworth. They made their first home in Boston, Massachusetts, then Crookston, Minnesota until 1955 when they moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota. She began working at the East Grand Forks Chamber of Commerce as a secretary, was promoted to Executive Vice President of the Chamber during which time the Arts and Crafts Council was formed and pledges began for the formation of the stage auditorium at the EGF Senior High School and plans were made for the EGF Heritage Center. She was a graduate of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Institute of Organizational Management at Notre Dame University in Indiana.
She retired in 1981 and she and Warren became full time RVer’s. They traveled the country until Warren passed away in 1993. She then settled in St. Petersburg, Fla, and during that time she made trips to Japan (to visit a niece), Norway (with a tour group), and Italy (with her church choir). She was also secretary for the Sunshine Senior Center Chorus.
She was a member of United Parish (Methodist) Church in Hillsboro, N. Dak., Mendenhall Presbyterian Church in East Grand Forks, Minn. and First Presbyterian Church in St. Petersburg. She sang alto in church choirs throughout her life. She was a member of the Eastern Star Red River Chapter #226 and was a Past Matron of the chapter.
She is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (Matthew) Reese of Mentor, Minn., Becky (Roger) Reese of Nevis, Minn., two sons Rod (Joanie) Miller of San Ramon, Calif. and Garry (Laurie) Miller of St. Petersburg, Fl.; eight grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one brother Vic (Sherri) Larson of Saukville, Wisc. She was preceded in death by her husband Warren, her parents and eight siblings, Gilman, Cleo, Bernice, Merl, Hazel, Odin, Phyllis and Lyle.
A memorial service will be held Oct. 22, 2011 at 2pm at Mendenhall Presbyterian Church, 528 10th St NW, East Grand Forks, MN 56721.
The family requests memorials to be given to Mendenhall Presbyterian Church in East Grand Forks.
