Virginia I. Schmitt, 88, of Manvel, ND passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at home.
Virginia Irene Brown was born the daughter of Roy E. and Ruvia (Herman) Brown, Sr. on February, 16, 1923 in Manvel, ND. She graduated from Manvel High School and was baptized and confirmed at the Zion Congregational Church in Manvel. She taught Sunday School for many years, was a member of the Woman's Guild, belonged to youth groups and held several church offices. She moved to St. Paul and resided there until her enlistment in military service. She enlisted in the Marine Corps Women's Reserve on April 23, 1943 at Minneapolis, MN and served on active duty during World War II. She was honorably discharged from military service on September 25, 1945 at Santa Barbara, CA. She returned to Manvel and following the death of her mother, helped her father raise the young children. Virginia married Glenn Schmitt on May 20, 1949 in the Zion Congregational Church in Manvel. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 299 of Manvel.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Glenn; a son, Daniel (Janet) Schmitt, Grand Forks, ND; a brother, Roy (Rosemary) Brown, Grand Forks, ND; sisters, Dorothy Winge, Hovart, ID, Joann DeMars, Roseau, MN and Kathleen (Keith) Danks, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Charles, James and Wendy and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a son Charles Schmitt; brothers, Joseph Brown, Robert Brown, William Brown and George Brown; sisters, Viola Gammel and Esther " Ruvia" Keenar.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Zion Congregational Church in Manvel, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour before the funeral service in the church on Saturday.
Burial: 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 299 of Manvel, ND and the North Dakota National Guard.
