Paul T. Thorson was born at his home on July 5, 1924 at Lawton, North Dakota to Bernhard and Rose (Roubal) Thorson.
He peacefully passed away July 31, 2011, age 87 also at his home with his family by his side.
Paul attended school at Lawton. After leaving school, he was in the Civilian Conservation Corp (CCC) program near Larimore, ND; erecting buildings at Turtle River State Park. He later joined the National Youth Association (NYA) program in Grand Forks to learn a trade. After being in the program for one year, Paul was sent to Seattle to work in a defense plant making parts for battle ships. Two years later, he returned to North Dakota and started working with his dad doing carpenter work. Paul later started his own construction company building many houses and commercial buildings in the Devils Lake area. For a time, he worked at the Nekoma Missile Site and was also an estimator for Great Plains Supply in Devils Lake. He married Ruth Mathiason on July 6, 1958. In 1970, they moved to Grand Forks where he worked for the city as a Building Inspector. After a 20 year career, he retired in 1990. He received a commendation of Lifetime Membership for outstanding service by the North Dakota Building Officials Association. Paul was also named North Dakota Building Official of the Year. Paul then worked for 1 ½ years at Northland Community College in East Grand Forks as a carpentry instructor. The Flood of 1997 necessitated Paul's return to work for the City of Grand Forks (until 2000). Paul served as a member of the River Fork Credit Union Credit Committee. His hobby was wood working and he made many clocks, which he enjoyed giving to friends and family; he especially enjoyed scrolling.
Paul is survived by his wife of 53 years of marriage, Ruth; sons, Alden, Webster, ND, Parnell (Louise), Waseca, MN; a daughter, Paulette (Myron) Bosch, Devils Lake, ND; seven grandchildren, Patrick (Lori) Thorson, Danielle (Jason) Kraft, Melaina (Eric) Bjorklund, Kayla (Scott) Jones, Melissa (Paul) Kitsch, Angela (Scott Bishoff) Herda, Kyle (Nicole) Herda; thirteen great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Bernard; his parents and a brother, James.
Memorial Service: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, August 4, 2011 in the Gregory J. Norman - Norman Funeral Chapel, 2950 South Washington Street.
Family Greeting: One hour before the memorial service in the funeral home on Thursday.
Interment: Lawton City Cemetery, Lawton, ND
