Harold "Lynn" Aasen
Harold "Lynn" Aasen was born July 26, 1936 in Erskine, MN, the only son of Harold and Edith (Ostmoe) Aasen.
He was raised in Winger, MN, where he attended school through the 8th grade. Lynn graduated from McIntosh High School with the class of 1954. Following graduation, Lynn furthered his education at Augsburg College, where he was a pitcher on their baseball team. In 1959, Lynn entered the United States Army where he served with the 48th Medical Battalion 2nd Armored Division and also on their Pistol Shooting Team. After an honorable discharge in 1961, Lynn returned to the Winger area and began working at the Sioux Mobil Station with his father, Harold. On July 14, 1962 Lynn was united in marriage to Kay Messelt. They made their home in Winger where they raised their family. Although driving school bus, Lynn's livelihood was with Sioux Oil, a business that has been family owned and operated since 1922. In 1995, his son, Jon, joined the crew and currently manages the family owned station. Reluctantly, Lynn was forced to retire in the fall of 2008 due to failing health. He died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at the Essentia Health Center, Fargo, ND, at the age of 74.
Over the years, Lynn was an active part of the Winger Community. He was a lifelong member of Calvary Lutheran Church and served on the council. He was also an active member with the Winger Lions Club and the American Legion Fengestad-Solie Post #200. In addition to keeping busy with the station, Lynn was a true outdoorsman and athletic enthusiast. He loved fishing and hunting, especially deer in the fall and was an avid golfer, bowler and excellent pitcher in his younger years. Lynn also enjoyed the Minnesota Twins and Vikings, trying to take in at least one game each season. Above all, was his love for his grandchildren. Even though far in miles, they were never far from his thoughts and always close to his heart.
Lynn is survived by his children: Jennifer (Keith) Tymchuk, Reedsport, OR, Peter (Elizabeth) Aasen, Warroad, MN, and Jon Aasen, Winger, MN; five grandchildren: Bailey and Blair Tymchuk, Hannah, Alex and Mason Aasen; two nieces, Sarah Fog, New York and Suzi McLane, Plymouth, MN; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Kay, and a sister, Hildegarde McLane.
