Former Grand Forks resident, Janice E. Harrington died during the early morning hours on Sunday, May 22, 2011, in the Ashland Care Center, Ashland NE. Born Janice Brown on November 26, 1937 to Eli & Ethel Brown in Arapahoe, NE, Janice spent much of her adult life in Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and California. Janice moved to the Grand Forks Air Force Base in 1969, with her husband Elmer (Bill) Harrington and their large family of eleven boys. Janice spent many years working in foodservice, customer service, and catering in Grand Forks. When Janice wasn't working or chasing after her boys, she enjoyed cooking, visiting with family and friends, needle point, working on cars, and she was actively involved in Boxing Inc. where she helped organize gambling nights, working at the boxing events, and helping raise funds to cover the cost of training camps and travel expenses for the youth of Grand Forks. Janice was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary #1874 since 1985 and the American Legion Auxiliary #0006 since 1989. After Bill passed away in September 1983, Janice made Grand Forks her home until moving to Lincoln, NE in November 1988. While living in Lincoln, Janice continued to work in foodservice until she was forced to retire early due to heath reasons in June 1997. Janice met and fell in love with her "special friend" Ron McKito in 1990. They spent 18 happy years together as a couple until Ron passed away from cancer in 2008.
Janice was a special mother and step-mother who dedicated her life to raising eleven boys: Jim (Jennifer) Harrington, Raleigh, NC, John (Rose) Russell, Columbia, MO, Tony (Vee) Harrington, Tucson, AZ, Ricky (Mary Ellen) Russell, Grand Forks, ND, Tom Harrington, Seattle, WA, Danny (Janine) Kersey-Russell, Bismarck, ND, Joe Harrington, Seattle, WA, Larry Russell, Lincoln, NE, Pat Harrington, Seattle, WA, Delbert (Lisa) Peters, Ocean Springs, MS, and Kelly Peters, Grand Forks, ND. Janice was a kind and caring grandmother to her 19 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
Janice is survived by her older sister Arliss Kinder and her younger sister Verna Raye Horton, both of Arapahoe, NE, and her eleven boys. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Eli & Ethel Brown, her infant sister Vera Faye, her husband Bill, and her "special friend" Ron McKito. Janice donated her body to the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, NE.
As per her request, the family had a private memorial service in Lincoln, NE.
In lieu of flowers, Janice asked that any memorials be sent to your local VFW Ladies Auxiliary or American Legion Auxiliary.
