John W. Vennes

John W. Vennes, age 86 of Grand Forks, ND passed away on May 10th, 2011 at his winter home in Sun City, AZ.

John W. Vennes, age 86 of Grand Forks, ND passed away on May 10th, 2011 at his winter home in Sun City, AZ.

John was born in 1924 in Grenora, ND to Albert and Gina Vennes. He spent his formative years in Zahl and Williston, ND. After serving in the Navy during WWII he moved to Grand Forks to attend the University of North Dakota and fall in love and marry Agnes Glinski his wife of 61 years who preceded him in death. He received advanced degrees in Microbiology from UND and the University of Michigan. He devoted his entire career to medical education at the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences. He served in numerous roles including professor, department chairman, interim and associate dean and professor emeritus. His tireless work for North Dakota medical education was driven by his passion for education as well as his love for North Dakota.

He is survived by his son Dale (Joan) Vennes; daughters Kathryn (Conrad) Vennes Grev and Patricia (Greg) Morgan; grandchildren: Aame Vennes, Eric ( Alice) Morgan, Tara ( Rick) Hochhalter, Paul Vennes-Tremewan and Bret Morgan; great grandchildren: Kendall Hochhalter and Amaya Morgan; brothers: Duane Vennes and Frank Vennes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Agnes and brothers: Robert, Albert and Charles.

A memorial service is planned for Monday, May 23rd at 1:00 at the Hughes Fine Arts Center on the UND Campus at 3350 Campus Drive.

A reception will follow at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences in the Vennes Atrium located at 501 No. Columbia Road.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers that memorials be sent to the UND Foundation at 3100 University Ave, 58202-8157 with directions that it be added to the John and Agnes Vennes Microbiology and Immunology Research Award Endowment.

Dale and family. I'm sorry to hear of your father's passing. I hope that you have good memories to fall back on to remember your father by. Best wishes to you all during this time. Take care Dale. John Betcher
