Harlan L. Holien passed away April 27, 2011 after a courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease.

Harlan L. Holien passed away April 27, 2011 after a courageous battle with diabetes and heart disease.

A career Army Staff Sergeant, he served his country in Korea and a two time tour of duty in Vietnam. His honors include Senior Parachutist, Good Conduct Achievement and most notably the Purple Heart. After retirement, he used his entrepreneurial spirit and gift of conversation in a variety of endeavors.

In 1995, he suffered a severe stroke and would spend the next 15 years at Haysville Health Center. There he touched the lives of many with his upbeat, never give up attitude and his sense of humor.

Harlan is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur Holien and Margaret (Peggy) Haugen. Survivors: his children, Harlan L. Holien, Jr., Julie L. Hanson (Steve), and Marla K. Holien (Paul); grandchildren, Nick, Eric (Christina), Shelby and Taylor; great-grandchildren, Skyy, Ryan, Mason, Nichole, Chase and Landon; sister, Audrey Christianson (Frank Tweet).

Memorial service: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 7th at Smith Mortuary, Haysville, KS.
