Vernon Quern, 92, of Oslo, MN, passed away on Sunday, April 3, 2011 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Albert Vernon Quern was born on November 4, 1918 in Polk County, MN, the son of Carlot and Ellen (Syrstad) Quern and grew up on the family farm south of Oslo. Vernon married Florence Hawkinson on August 31, 1941 in Oslo. Shortly after, he was drafted into the US Army and served with the field artillery battalion in Europe during World War II. Following his discharge in 1945, he farmed with his brother Kenneth, raising small grains and sugar beets in the Oslo area until his retirement in 1985. In 1986, he and Florence moved from their farm to a new home in Oslo.
Vernon was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, a Luther League advisor, a stewardship committee member, on the parsonage board, as well as ushering for services and funerals. He was a charter member of the Lions Club, a 9 year director on the Oslo Cenex board and a member and Chaplin of the Oslo American Legion Post #331.
Treasured memories are left with Florence, loving wife of 69 years; children, Darryl "Jake" and Lenaye Quern of Fisher, MN, Vaughn and Linda Quern of Thompson, ND and Gayle and Bob Gjovik of Apple Valley, MN; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Stacey and Joel Asp and their children, Daniel and Andrea, Shannon Quern, Brent and Melissa Quern and their children, Dylan and Lilly, Tim Gjovik, Cory Gjovik and JoAnn Heim, Steven and Amy Quern and their children Addison, Bailey, Isaac and Aubrey, Cindy and Tim Briggeman and their children Caleb and Peyton, Michael Quern and fiancée Diane Johnson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; great-grandson, Zachary Quern; brothers, Arthur, Oscar M., Iner, Kenneth and infant Oscar and sisters, Evelyn Smebak, Mildred Betts, Clara Botko and infant Pearl.
FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 AM on Friday, April 8, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oslo, MN.
VISITATION: After 5:30 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service on Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Oslo and one hour before services on Friday at the church.
INTERMENT: Granville Cemetery, rural Oslo, MN at a later date.
