Roger Berdeen Olson was born on September 20, 1937 in Malung Township, Roseau, Minnesota, the son of Bernard and Alice (Olmstead) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau, MN. Roger attended Brandt School, Malung School, and also Roseau High School.
After high school Roger was united in marriage to Lucille Brenhaug in September of 1955. To this union four children were born: Lynn, Cynthia, Julie, and Tracy.
On August 23, 1961 Roger entered into the United States Army. He proudly served in Korea, Vietnam, Germany, and several U.S. Airfields. Roger retired in Washington D.C. in 1982 as Sergeant 1st Class, E-7, with 21 years, 5 months, and 8 days of service. His awards and decorations include the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, Aircraft Crewman Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Overseas Service Ribbons, Army Service Ribbons, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Humanitarian Service Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
In October 1963, Roger married Myra Rochelle Gregory. The couple was blessed with another son Roger Jr.
While serving in Germany in 1970, Roger met and married Elfreida Wogg. They lived together in Germany for several years while stationed there. After his retirement from the military, Roger and Elfreida moved to the Thief River Falls, MN. He worked for Jung's Bakery in Thief River Falls, the United States Postal Service in Fargo, ND, and Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls. In June of 1992, Elfreida passed away.
On July 16, 1993, Roger and Ruth Scheie were united in marriage. They made their home in Thief River Falls, where Roger lived until his death.
Roger loved fishing and the lake. He enjoyed deer hunting and especially loved time with his family, his friends, and Patches the dog.
He served as Past Commander of the Thief River Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793, and was a member of the American Legion Post 117 and the Eagles.
Roger is survived by wife, Ruth Olson, Thief River Falls, MN; children: Lynn Ann (Craig) Grassel, Gillette, WY, Cynthia (Daniel) Schmit, Wahpeton, ND, Julie (Keith) Gemmill, Fordville, ND, Tracy (Kim) Olson, Fordville, ND, Roger Olson, Jr. Rutherford, Stuttgart, AR, stepchildren: Deborah Gregory Moyer of West Memphis, AR, Tanya Gregory of Monticello, AR, Cindy (Jason) Odberg, Thief River Falls, MN and Jeff Scheie, Thief River Falls, MN; Grandchildren: Lisa (Kris) Jacobson, Carl (Katy) Grassel, Jacob (Suzey) Grassel, Christon (Elizabeth) Linstad, Patricia (Scott) Ode, Michael (Jennifer) Gemmill, Thomas (Shannon) Gemmill, Andrew Gemmill, Jacy Olson, Jade Olson, Colton Rutherford, step-grandchildren: Brittney Odberg, Austin Odberg, Peyton Scheie, Morgan O'Hara; great-grandchildren: Kai Jacobson, Avery and Seth Linstad, Jacob and Ethan Ode, Chelsea, Layne, and Colton Gemmill, Kendra and Kelsey Gemmill; mother-in-law, Bernice Looker of Thief River Falls, MN; brother and sisters: Raymond C. (Joyce) Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, Blanche (Stephen) Pulczinski, and twin sister, Beverly (Elmer) Olson, both of Roseau, MN, along with several nieces and nephews.
Roger was preceded in death by parents, Benard and Alice Olson; wife, Elfreida Olson; sister, Kay Hoffman and her unborn child and nephew, Chad Hoffman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, April 1, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until 11:00 AM, Friday, April 1, 2011 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN.
Burial will follow in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery, Thief River Falls, MN.
Military honors will be provided by the Thief River Falls Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and the Thief River Falls American Legion Post 117.
