Marian Grace Brown was born in Grand Forks on January 24, 1924, to Hilliard and Sarah (McLeod) Brown. She was raised on a farm in Ferry Township near Manvel ND. She attended Falconer #11, a one-room school house in rural Grand Forks, through eighth grade. In 1944, at age 20, she moved to Grand Forks and found work doing cleaning and babysitting until attending Aaker's Business College, graduating in 1963. After graduating, she worked as a medical secretary for radiologist, R Douglas Doss, and in 1964 went to work as a secretary for Carpenters' Union #2028. In 1967, Marian began her 32-year career in the business office at Grand Forks Clinic/Altru Clinic, retiring in October, 1999.
After retiring, Marian enjoyed caring for her plants, going out for meals with her friends, and being part of the craft group at the Grand Forks Senior Center. She especially enjoyed crocheting doilies and embroidery.
In 2010, Marian was honored as a fifty-year member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Grand Forks. She moved into the Parkwood Place assisted living apartments in August of 2008, where she lived until last month, when she entered Valley Eldercare.
Marian is survived by a niece, Cindy (Dick) Sommers of Fairfield, CA and a nephew, Steve (Maxine) Rust of Casselton ND; great-nephews, Dominic Sommers of Fairfield, CA, Elliot Rust of Bismarck, ND and Ryan Rust of Casselton, ND and great-niece, Heather (Jared) Kurtz and their children of Thompson, ND. She also leaves behind several cousins and close friends, who were dear to her heart.
Marian was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Verdell Rust, and a nephew, Richard Rust.
Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011 in Wesley United Methodist Church, 1600 4th Avenue North, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the funeral service in the church on Saturday.
Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery North, Grand Forks, ND, in the spring.
