Betty J. Barkie, 83, of Grand Forks, ND died Wednesday, December 1, 2010 in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks.

Betty Jean Karver was born July 2, 1927 in rural Crookston, MN, the daughter of David John and Tillie (Haller) Karver. She grew up on their Crookston farmstead working on the farm and for Bridgeman Creamery. She was united in marriage to George Piche on June 12, 1947. They established their home on a farm in Terrebonne Township, rural Red Lake Falls, MN. Betty kept busy with farm work, gardening, canning and raising her four sons. Betty moved to Crookston, MN in 1970, where she worked various jobs. She later married Charles Barkie on December 29 1976. The couple lived in Grand Forks, ND. Betty continued to enjoy gardening, canning, tending flowers and became known for preparing Lebanese food. Betty also enjoyed attending family and holiday gatherings, documenting these times through photography.

Betty is survived by her husband, Charles "Charlie" Barkie, Grand Forks, ND; children Dennis (Deb) Piche, Red Lake Falls, MN, Roger (Patty) Piche, Red Lake Falls, MN, Wayne (Lisa) Piche, Manvel, ND; stepdaughter, Bonnie Gustafson, Grand Forks, ND; grandchildren, Renae (Ken) Olexa, Scott (Lisa) Piche, Jeremy Knutson, Tiffany (Mike) Sheppard, Kristen Slover, Lisa Piche, Amy Buckholz, Tina (Paulo) Romero, Stacey (Andy) Olslund, Tyler Piche, and Ryan Piche; step granddaughter, Sherri Pokrzywinski; fifteen great-grand children; two step great-grandchildren; one step great-great granddaughter; former daughter-in-law, Sylvia Piche and close family friend Val Knutson. She was also survived by three siblings, Donna Mead, Marysville, WA, Clarice (Jerry) Torrance, Grand Forks, ND and Lawrence Karver, Crookston, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, son, Benjamin "Ben" Piche and grandson, Mark Piche.

Funeral Service: 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 6, 2010 in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel.

Visitation: One hour prior to the funeral service in the funeral chapel on Monday.

Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery South, Grand Forks, ND.
