Duane F. Hennessy, 77, Grand Forks, ND passed away Thursday, September 9, 2010 in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.
Duane Francis Hennessy was born April 22, 1933 the son of Leo and Josephine E. (Harmon) Hennessy in Minot, ND. He attended school in Minot and graduated from high school there in 1951. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from July 1953 to June of 1955 and returned to Minot graduating from Minot State College in 1958. He married Mary J. Carmody on December 1, 1956 in Minot. He began his coaching at DesLacs, ND high school in 1959 and then moved to Bismarck, ND in 1962. In Bismarck he coached wrestling and football; winning state titles. In summer of 1966 he returned to Minot where he was the high school wrestling coach; again winning state titles. In 1969 he moved to Grand Forks where he received his Masters Degree from the University of North Dakota and began coaching football at Grand Forks Central High School.
He later became the wrestling coach for Central; winning many state titles. Duane was inducted into the North Dakota High School Coaches Association Hall Of Fame in 1990. He retired from coaching in 1997 but continued teaching Industrial Arts classes until retiring from teaching in 1998. After retirement he worked as an electrical inspector for the city of Grand Forks.
Duane loved his grandkids and loved spending time with them. He was also a great friend to all who knew him. He loved spending mornings at Darcy's Café with the coffee crowd. He was an avid gardener and planted many tulips around the southwest corner of his home. He was always out walking, or going to workout, and could always be found "chatting-up" his many, many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Kelly Hennessy, Victorville, CA; sons, Kirk, Grand Forks, ND and Kevin (Erin), Fontana, CA; grandchildren, Jacob, Jannon and Max; sisters, Marion Evenson, Lois (Warren) Olson and Joyce Eggert all of Minot, ND; brothers, Leo (Darlene), Minot, ND and Tom (Susan), Bellingham, WA; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his son, Kem; a brother, Harley and brothers-in-law, Virgil Everson, Herb Allan King Sr. and Gordon Eggert.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 16, 2010 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service and a 4:30 p.m. rosary service in Gregory J. Norman - Norman Funeral Home, 2950 S. Washington St., Grand Forks, ND.
Burial: 11:00 a.m. Friday at Rosehill Memorial Cemetery, Minot, ND.
Military Honors: American Legion Post 26, Minot, ND and the North Dakota National Guard.
