Donald J. Litzinger, 75, of Grand Forks, ND, and a Deacon of the Catholic Diocese of Fargo passed away Sunday, July 11, 2010 in Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND surrounded by his loving family and friends.
Donald Joseph Litzinger was born on February 19, 1935 in Grand Forks, ND, the son of Benard J. and Mae E. (Dietz) Litzinger. He graduated in 1953 from St. James High School in Grand Forks. He enlisted into the United States Army on July 10, 1956 at Grand Forks, ND and served as a Radio Teletype Operator. He was honorably discharged from military service on July 9, 1959 at Bismarck, ND. Donald married Dorothy Bergan on June 23, 1956 in St. Michael's Catholic Church in Grand Forks. He was employed by the Burlington Northern Railroad as a Carman until his retirement in 1991 and continued to reside in Grand Forks until his death. Dorothy preceded him in death on July 16, 2002.
Donald was a very active member of St. Mary's Church. He was ordained a Permanent Deacon on November 29, 1980 in St. Mary's Cathedral in Fargo, ND. The Rev. Mr. Litzinger served nearly 30 years in his parish. "Deacon Don" as he was affectionately called, looked upon this calling as a passion, not a job. He and his wife Dorothy together touched the lives of many.
Donald was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Bishop Provencher Assembly 1578 and served as their treasurer. He could be found during Fighting Sioux hockey games volunteering at the Taco in a Bag stand. Don enjoyed his season tickets for the Fighting Sioux football and listening to UND Hockey and Minnesota Twins games on the radio or watching them on television. He enjoyed gardening, working on wood projects, going to the DQ and trying to outsmart the neighborhood squirrels. Don always had a smile and a kind word for everyone. He was truly someone who put others first.
Donald is survived by, two daughters, Dawn Marie (Michael) Swedberg, Winchester, VA, and Debbie (John) Broxmeyer, League City, TX; a son, Daniel, Rochester, MN; 3 grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah (Brian) Erskine and Joshua Swedberg; brothers, Robert (Janet), Gerald (Faye), Ardell (Karen); sisters, LaVerne (Jim) Waslow, Ann (Mrs. Allen) Jensen; a sister-in-law, Susan (Mrs. William) Litzinger, all of Grand Forks, ND.
