Muriel Elaine "Sissy" Brekke

Muriel Elaine “Sissy” Brekke, 91, a lifelong Nielsville, Minnesota resident, died Wednesday morning, June 16, 2010, in the Halstad Living Center at Halstad, Minnesota.

Sissy was born on the Brekke family farm, near Nielsville, on January 19, 1919, one of six children of the union of William Saave “W.S.” and Clara Christine (Hanson) Brekke. She was baptized and confirmed at the St. Petri Lutheran Church in Nielsville, and attended the Nielsville Consolidated School. Sissy spent her entire life on the farm before moving to the Living Center in January of 2006. She loved farm life and all the commotion that went along with it during planting and harvesting time. Her coffee-pot was always on and Sissy looked forward to having her “boys” stop in for their daily visits, as well as other family and friends who came to call. She loved to light-heartedly tease whenever the chance arose, and looked forward to playing Santa Claus every Christmas while wearing her “Christmas smock” and signature “red stocking hat.” Sissy enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, embroidery, and especially putting jigsaw puzzles together with her great nieces and nephews. Her daily routine also included her favorite television shows: Wheel of Fortune, Judge Judy, and Judge Joe Brown. Sissy was a devoted member of the St. Petri Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. She had been a member of the Nielsville Legion Auxiliary for over sixty-four years, and was also a member of the Nielsville Senior Citizens, and the Royal Neighbors. Sissy was a very gentle lady, and her faith and family meant everything to her. Her kindness and love were a constant inspiration to her nieces, nephews, and their families, and fond memories of her will remain forever in their hearts.

Sissy leaves her nieces and nephews, Robert William (Heidi) Brekke of Nielsville, MN, Vickie Elizabeth (Greg) Abentroth of Cummings, ND, Richard Alan Brekke of Nielsville, and Stephanie Orvik (Scott) Abentroth of Nielsville; her great nieces and nephews, Shawn Brekke, Justin, Nicholas, and Devin Abentroth, Jason and Jonathon Brekke, Jessica (Ryan) Altepeter, Samantha Brekke, Tiffany Abentroth, Vanessa (James) Stanton, and Angela Brekke; her great-great nephews, Logan Brekke and Nathan Altepeter, great-great niece, Natasha Abentroth; a very special friend and caregiver at the Halstad Living Center, Chris Iverson of Perley, MN; her beloved pet cat, “Toadie Girl”; and many other relatives. Sissy was preceded in death by her parents, W. S. and Clara Brekke; two sisters, Viola Brekke and Eleanor (Arthur) Hupp; and three brothers, Spencer Brekke, Cardiff Brekke, and Robert (Opal) Brekke. May God bless Sissy’s memory.

The funeral service for Muriel Elaine “Sissy” Brekke will be held at 10:30 am, Monday, June 21, 2010, in the St. Petri Lutheran Church at Nielsville, Minnesota with The Rev. Valerian J. Ahles, officiating.

Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in the Sundet Cemetery, rural Climax, Minnesota.

The Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, Crookston, Minnesota, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
