Ann Merdink, 94, of Stephen, Minnesota passed away at the Good Samaritan Center in Warren, Minnesota on Saturday evening, May 22nd, 2010.
Anna Eleanora Hamberg was born July 2, 1915 in Nelson Park Township of Marshall County, Minnesota. Ann was the daughter of Jons Emanuel and Gunda (Nelson) Hamberg and was the second of nine children. She was baptized in Salem Lutheran Church on November 25, 1915. Ann attended country school and was confirmed at Hegland Lutheran Church. At 16 Ann was working at Nellie's Cafe in Warren.
She later worked at the Greystone Hotel's cafe in Stephen where she met her husband Donald "Dutch" Merdink. They were married on August 10, 1941 at Stephen. In 1960 Ann began working as an assistant cook in the Stephen School. She retired as head cook in 1982.
Ann was a member of the Stephen Presbyterian Church and served as a Deacon and Elder and helped with the youth programs. She was very active in Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, serving as troop leader and den mother.
Ann served on the first committee formed to get Old Home Town Museum started and worked several years at the museum. Ann entered the Good Samaritan Center in February of 2005. Dutch passed away on February 24, 2008.
Family members include daughters, Hazel Merdink, East Grand Forks, MN and Roberta (Keith) Bergeron, Lincoln, NE; a son, Donald (Peggy) Merdink, Woodbury, MN; 11 grandchildren, Paula, Stacey, Tina, Brent, Deanna, Max, Amanda, Marty, Molly, Angela and John; 12 great grandchildren; a sister, Verna Hvidsten, Thief River Falls, MN; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Hamberg, Staples, MN; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Nels E., Roy and Harry; and sisters, Blenda, Nan, Ruby and Grace.
Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, May 28th, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. in Salem Lutheran Church, rural Stephen.
Interment will be in the Stephen City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service.
The Austin Funeral Home of Stephen is in charge of arrangements.

I was very sorry to read about Ann's death. I am from Stephen and knew Ann and the Merdinks very well. I could go on and on with stories you would find BORING. Ann was a wonderful person and she always had a smile & nice greeting for us all. I live in a retirement home in Rochester since my husband died. Patricia Walker Odegard, Jack Walker is my brother.
