Elmer Frank Miska, 90, formerly of Tabor, MN died Saturday, May 1, 2010 at his home in Grand Forks, ND due to natural causes.
Elmer Miska was born November 1, 1919 in Warren, MN the son of Frank Joseph and Mary (Marie) Anne Dusek Miska. He grew up in Tabor, MN, attended elementary school in the Tabor one-room schoolhouse and graduated from Warren High School. He married his high school sweetheart, Junice Olive Paulson, of Nielsville and Warren Minnesota on December 24, 1942 in Lafayette, Indiana.
He entered the US Navy April 1942 and retired as a Senior Chief in 1964. He serviced in WW2 and the Korean War. At the time of his retirement, he was an instructor of Navy Helicopter Electronics. He was stationed at Lafayette, Indiana; Norway, Scotland, England; Hawaii; Banana River, FL; Norfolk, VA; Panama; Bermuda; Norman, OK; Memphis, TN; and Imperial Beach, CA. He worked for the Civil Service at the Grand Forks Air Force Base for many years retiring in 1982. He was a full time care giver for his wife, Junice, until her death on July 4, 1994. He moved to Grand Forks in 2007 following a devastating house fire that destroyed the home built by his homesteading parents.
Continuing education was essential to Elmer as he was always reading to learn new skills and current events. Physical fitness, including long distance running was important and he continued to use his Air-Dyne bicycle up to his death. He enjoyed lifelong playing of the harmonica (self taught) and the violin which he learned as a boy, and was taught by a Tabor Priest.
He is survived daughter Anne Christine Miska Smith, and son-in law Mitchell Harvey Smith of Grand Forks; and nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife, Junice; his parents; infant sister, Mary; Brother, Charles Joseph Miska, sister-in-law, Elizabeth Miska; sister, Helen Ann Miska Kulik and brother-in-law, Joe Kulik.
Funeral Service: 3:00 p.m., Friday, May 7, 2010 at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Tabor, MN.
Visitation: One hour before Funeral Service in Holy Trinity Catholic Church of Tabor, MN
Interment: Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery, Tabor, MN.
