Harold John Haubrich, age 82, Hallock, MN, son of Leo and Elizabeth Haubrich, died March 1, 2010, in Hallock. He was born June 18, 1927, in Orleans, MN. He had one brother, Earl, of Bloomington, MN. He attended school at Orleans, MN, through 8th grade, and attended high school at Lancaster High School, graduating in 1945.
He served in the Navy, where he worked on the first IBM computers.
He attended the University of North Dakota, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce.
Harold married Jeanette Ann Hanson of Orleans on December 27, 1950, at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Hallock. They were married for 54 years; she passed away November 12, 2007. Harold and Jeanette lived in Orleans, Lancaster and Hallock for most of their lives, but they also lived in Escondido, CA, and Tucson, AZ.
Harold was a farmer, a teacher at Lancaster High School, and a U.S. Customs Supervisor for the Pembina, ND, district, for more than 25 years. He was named Teacher of the Year in 1956 in Lancaster. He was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Lions. He was witty, and had a wry sense of humor. He enjoyed talking about politics and telling stories about growing up in Orleans. He was an avid reader of the history of World War II and was very knowledgeable about many topics. He was a dedicated fan of the Minnesota Twins and the Minnesota Vikings, and one of his personal highlights was being in the stadium when the Twins won the World Series in 1987. He enjoyed playing cards, and was an enthusiast of tractors, cars and motorcycles.
Harold is survived by his children, Greg (Cheryl Turner), Moore, OK; Nancy (Bob), San Francisco, CA; Haley, Hallock, MN; John L., Oklahoma City, OK; Michael, St. Paul; Mary Berglee (Royal), Morehead, KY; and Anna-Marie (Ross), St. Paul; as well as two grandsons he raised as sons, George (Angela) Peterson, Lincoln, NE; and John D. (Sigrid), Tempe, AZ; nine grandchildren; three great grandsons and a great granddaughter; his brother, Earl (Barbara), Bloomington, MN; brother-in-laws Ronald Hanson and Jim Drake; sister-in-laws June Drake, Barbara Haubrich and Maxine Hanson; 4 nephews and 4 nieces; and close friend Richard Wilwant of Lancaster. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette; parents, Leo and Elizabeth; niece, Kathy June Hanson Kent; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leonard and Anna Hanson; and great granddaughter, Virginia Rose Peterson.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 4th, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Hallock.
Interment will be in Riverview Memorial Garden Cemetery, Lancaster, MN.
Visitation will be at the Austin-Hughes Funeral Chapel in Hallock on Wednesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:00 p.m.
The family requests memorial donations to St. Patricks Catholic Church or to the Hallock Public Library.
