Irene M. Hofferber, 86, of East Grand Forks, MN passed away Friday, January 8, 2010 at Valley Elder Care in Grand Forks, ND.

Irene was born on June 5, 1923 at Glenvil, NE to Charles and Amelia (Ocker) Cornell. She grew up in Glenvil and graduated from Glenvil High School in 1940. Following high school she worked in a bakery at Hastings.

During WWII she volunteered at the USO where she met her future husband Kenneth J. Hofferber. The couple was married in September of 1945. They made their home in Grand Island where her husband was a wedding photographer and Irene assisted with hand tinting of the photos. Ken later joined American Crystal Sugar Company working in Grand Island until being transferred to Crookston, MN in 1954. While living there she worked at the sugar sacking station.

She was a volunteer in the kitchen at the American Lutheran Church in Crookston. Irene enjoyed gardening, canning, arts and crafts, writing letters to family and friends, and helping family with home improvement projects. She and Ken enjoyed spending their vacations visiting family and friends in Nebraska, Washington state and California.

Survivors include a son Charles Hofferber of East Grand Forks, MN, a son Thomas and his wife Ellen Hofferber of Redmond, WA, a daughter in law Linda Hofferber of Indianola, WA, two granddaughters, Cassandra and Alison Hofferber both of Bainbridge Island, WA.

She is also survived by a sister Alice Bigelow of Burlingame, CA, nieces and nephews and special friends Nancy and Glenn Yoshida of Grand Forks, ND.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, a brother Richard Cornell, a sister Velma Monroe and an infant nephew Robert Bigelow.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Marion Fike will officiate.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time on Wednesday.

Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Manna Resort Christian Camp in Fairfield, NE or the American Diabetes Association.
