He was born on a farm in Walsh County on May 22, 1909. He was the youngest of nine children, born to January and Augustine (Faille) Ebert, French-Canadian immigrants.
He was educated in a country school near Nash, ND and he spent one year at St. Boniface Catholic School, Manitoba, Canada. He graduated from Grafton High School in 1928. He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Grafton.
Ernest married Georgia Marjorie Bartelson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bismarck, ND in 1935. Georgia died in 1996. Their children are: Ellen June (Gerald) O'Connor, Grand Forks; Alice Jean (James) Fagan, Bartlesville, OK; Marjorie Anne Janousek, Grand Forks; Joyce Elizabeth (Ronald) Gerhardt, and Barbara Josephine Arbach, both of Bismarck, ND; and Marion Diane (Michael) Hindes, Omaha, NE. An infant granddaughter and infant great-grandson also preceded him in death.
He farmed in Walsh County until his retirement in 1974. He often spoke of how fortunate he was to work at something he really enjoyed. He served on the Auburn Grain Elevator Board, and on the new St. John the Evangelist Church Building Committee in Grafton. He and Georgia moved to Grand Forks in 1976. They became active in the Senior Citizens Center and the Center's Sunshine Band. He wrote articles for the Senior Center Newspaper, "Ernestly Speaking" for the Grafton Record (1977-1980), and several feature articles for the Grand Forks Herald. He was one of the contributing authors for Scattered Steeples (a centennial history of the Fargo Catholic Diocese), edited by Rev. William C. Sherman.
