Bernice Grundyson

Bernice Grundyson, age 89, of McIntosh, MN passed away on Friday, December 11th at First Care Hospital in Fosston, MN.

Bernice Marie Haugen was born October 10, 1920 in rural Makoti, ND to John T. and Christine (Peterson) Haugen. She attended her first eight years of school in a one room country school one mile from her home.

Bernice moved to Winger, MN in 1936 and graduated from McIntosh High School in 1939. At this time she lived with her sister Borgie and Ben Geldaker. She worked on area farms babysitting and doing farm chores, and at the Winger Telephone Office where she worked the switchboards. She also worked at the Farmer State Bank of Winger.

On June 24, 1945 she was united in marriage to Kermit T. Grundyson at the Knute Grundyson farm. To their union two daughters were born, Rebecca Louise and Linda Marie. They made their home in McIntosh, Winger and rural McIntosh, MN. Kermit worked for Haagenson-Tranby Construction. Bernice and the girls would spend summers on the road at “camp.” Sadly Kermit passed away February 28, 1983.

Bernice worked in McIntosh at the Soil Conservation Office and retired from the ASCS Office January 3, 1986. Bernice enjoyed volunteering at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McIntosh making quilts for World Relief, and also at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home helping with bingo.

Bernice was seldom found at home. Her family often referred to her as their “social butterfly.” Bernice enjoyed any social event involving her friends and family. Bernice especially enjoyed her time spent with her family at Becky and Steve’s on Union Lake and winters in El Paso, TX with Linda and Rick. Bernice enjoyed her many travels to Norway, Spain, Canada, and her bus trips with Veronica Knudson.

Bernice is survived by two daughters, Rebecca “Becky” (Steve) Vesledahl of Erskine, MN and Linda (Rick) Smith of Fargo, ND; five grandchildren, Kim (Shane) Renner of Detroit Lakes, MN, Chris Smith of Racine, WI, Mike Vesledahl of Erskine, Shelly (Shannon) Burcham of Winger, and Dan (Stacey) Vesledahl of Winger; nine great grandchildren, Heidi and Linsay Bellanger, Jordyn Smith, Abby, Sammi and Bailee Burcham, Mikayla, Katelyn and Gunnar Vesledahl; one sister, Doris Schlecht of Seattle, WA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
