Merlyn Walter Dahlin, 82, passed away peacefully at home Thursday, Nov. 12, 2009.
Merlyn was born July 3, 1927, in Brocket, N.D., to Gustaf and Belle Dahlin. He graduated from high school in Brocket. He joined the Army and served three years in World War II. He was honorably discharged Dec. 30, 1948. He came to Fort Worth in 1949 to attend Texas Wesleyan College. He graduated with honors in 1951. He then attended TCU, graduating with a master's degree in business and accounting. He earned his CPA certificate in 1955.
In his early career, Merlyn worked for Danziger Oil, Southern Production Company and Barney Holland Oil Co. He started his private practice in 1957. The firm grew to become Dahlin, Fitch, Alexander and Seymund, P.C.
In addition to practicing accounting, Merlyn was an entrepreneur. He was involved with nursing homes, apartments, warehouses, and his farms. Going to the farm was one of his favorite things to do. Merlyn sold his interest in the accounting firm and retired in 2001.
Merlyn and Ruth enjoyed traveling to many countries as well as throughout the USA. They embarked on cruises with friends to the Caribbean, Alaska and Hawaii, and always had a great time. Merlyn loved to play gin rummy and met frequently with his gin buddies.
Merlyn was an active member of the Moslah Shrine Patrol and served as president in 1979. He received a lifetime achievement award in 2004 for dedicated service to the patrol for the past 30 years. He was also a member of the Royal Order of the Jesters.
The family expresses special appreciation for his wonderful caregivers, Teresa Trieglaf and the Community Hospice nurses. Also, a special thanks to his doctors, Dr. Suzan Blue and Dr. Frood Eelani.
Survivors: Wife of 36 years, Ruth Dahlin; daughters, Merlya Wright and Amy Dahlin; stepchildren, Everette Andrews and wife, Patricia and Adelaide Thomsen and husband, Jim; grandchildren, Holly Holland, Amanda Holland, Blake Andrews and Matthew Andrews; great-grandchildren, Josh, Kaleb, Bethany, Sarah, Anna and Marly; brother, Dean Dahlin; sisters, Marlene Rogers, Vernae Trudeau, and Germaine Polak; numerous nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.
The service was held at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, at The United Methodist Church, 209 Bluebonnet St. in Saginaw, Texas, the Rev. Mel Bishara officiating.
Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park.
Pallbearers: Bill Alexander, Dr. Bob Brennan, Hank Carroll, John Deib, Wil Gilchrist, Paul Johnson, Don Kelley, Ken Noel and Charles Sweeney. Honorary pallbearers: John Anderson, Otis Bakker, Paul Sandstrom, Murray Brown and members of the Moslah Shrine Patrol.
Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions in Merlyn's honor may be made to Alzheimer's Disease Research, 22512 Gateway Center Drive, Clarksburg, Md., 20871 or Shriner's Hospital for Children, P.O. Box 1320, Fort Worth, Texas, 76101.
