Alvin Grandstrand, 93, of Viking, MN, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2009 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Alvin John Grandstrand was born to John A. and Elizabeth Grandstrand on August 1, 1916 at Stephen, MN. He was the first baby baptized by Reverend James Gronseth, who later became his uncle. Alvin was confirmed on Palm Sunday 1931. He grew up in the Happy Corner area northeast of Stephen. He attended elementary school at Benson School and attended two years of high school. He married Bernyce Tangquist on June 14, 1941. In December 1941, Alvin and Bernyce moved to her grandparents homestead in rural Viking and started farming.
He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church, treasurer of Drotts School District, and also the Viking Township treasurer for many years. Alvin was also a member of the Swedish Society and the Viking Town and Garden Club. At the age of 67, he completed his GED and at the age of 70, he became a Master Gardener.
He is survived by his wife Bernyce; three sons, Gaylord Grandstrand of Viking, MN, Winslow (Diane) Grandstrand of St. Paul, MN and Wesley (Jeanine) Grandstrand of Fridley; grandson, Kirk (Jackie) Grandstrand; three granddaughters, Chelsey, Erin and Allis Grandstrand; great-granddaughter, Grace Grandstrand and sister, Ida Rupprecht of Thief River Falls, MN.
Alvin was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Vera Valeskie.
With God’s grace, Alvin lived well for 93 years.
Funeral Service: 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Zion Lutheran Church in Viking, MN.
Visitation: After 5:00 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service on Tuesday at the DuBore Funeral Home in Warren, MN.
Interment: Viking Cemetery, Viking, MN.
