Mae L. Yates

Mae L. Yates, 93, of Crookston, MN, died early Tuesday morning, July 7, 2009, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston.

Mae was born in Newton Township of Winnebago County, Iowa on May 28, 1916, one of seven children of the union of John and Louise (Holland) Quam. She moved with her family to Crookston as a young girl and was a 1934 graduate of Central High School. For several years she was employed at the Montgomery Ward store in Crookston. Mae would later meet the love of her life, Joseph Kilpatrick Yates, at a New Year's Eve dance in Crookston. The couple was united in marriage on May 10, 1946 at the Trinity Lutheran Church and made their home in Crookston all their married lives. Together Mae and Joe raised three children: Marlene, John, and Sharron. Joe owned and operated Yates Oil Company and Service Station for over forty years. Mae did all of the bookkeeping for the business throughout the years and helped Joe make many decisions that enabled the Company to grow and prosper. Sadly, Joe passed away on November 24, 1997. Mae continued to live in her home until moving to the Summit Apartments of the Villa in 2003. In April of 2006 she became a resident of the Nursing Home.

Mae was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and WELCA for many years.

Mae will be remembered as the apple of her adoring husband Joe's eye. She lovingly raised three children, always putting family above all else. Her six grandchildren will hold memories of her comfort, cooking, dance in her step, and quick wit close to their hearts. Her four great-grandchildren carry on the legacy of Mae and Joe and the family they loved so dearly.

Grateful to have shared in her life are her son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Yates of Overland Park, KS; two daughters and sons-in-law: Marlene and Rollie Carlson of Wayzata, MN, and Sharron and William McKechnie of Cotton, MN; six grandchildren: Mariah (Nick) McKechnie-Fadziewicz, Kaitlyn McKechnie, Casey Carlson, Lindi ( Mike) Steffes, Kevin Yates (Amy Trowbridge-Yates), and Christopher Yates; four great-grandchildren: Lydia Yates, Azalea Steffes, Lily & Jose Fadziewicz; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

In addition to Joe, her beloved husband of fifty-one years, Mae was preceded in death by her parents; brothers: Henry, Donald, and Stanley Quam; and sisters: Burnette Sprague, Myrtle Little and Laura Jane Borgolte. Blessed be Mae's memory.

The Funeral Service for Mae Yates will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 11, 2009, in the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston, with the Rev. Jo Gast, officiating.

Visitation will be at the funeral home for one hour before the service.

Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.
