George H. Schroedl Jr., 77, of Grand Forks, ND passed away unexpectedly Thursday, May 14, 2009 in Fargo, ND.
George Herman Schroedl was born August 25, 1931, the son of George and Katherine (Uhlenhake) Schroedl in Verona, ND. In 1938, his family moved to Perham, MN, where George graduated from high school.
After high school he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Korean War. When discharged, George moved to Grand Forks to attend the University of North Dakota and graduated in 1958. He married Marie (Kouba) in 1957. After graduation George and Marie moved to Lake Park, MN where he taught for one year. He then returned to Grand Forks and taught mathematics at Valley Junior High until he retired in 1989. He was also employed at Minnkota Power during the summers and after his retirement from teaching. He retired from Minnkota Power in 1995. Marie preceded him in death on November 28, 1989.
George was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council 1260, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Elks Club and the American Legion. He loved to garden and take care of his lawn, watch the Twins play, and have morning coffee with the "gang." He also loved to travel to Arizona during the winter and he loved being outdoors. He was an avid card player and loved to dance and do Suduko puzzles.
George is survived by his son, Thomas (Mary) Schroedl; daughters, Kathryn (Frank) Coe, Ann (Gary) Baumeister, Susan Schroedl (Jack Walsh), Lori (Greg) Hefta; grandsons, Jeff, Michael; granddaughters, Emily, Sara, Jennifer, Kathryn, Rachel; great-grandson, Shawn; a sister, Clara Schroedl, sister-in-law, Frances Givens, brother-in-law, Adolf Vrchota, and loving companion Aurel Wood.
He was preceded in death by, his parents, his wife, Marie; his brother, Harold; sisters Delores Hedstrom, Leota Plautz and Marion Vrchota.
George's kind and gentle spirit will be dearly missed by family and his many friends.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 18, 2009 in St. Michael's Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday with a 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Monday.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND.
Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota National Guard.
