Lowell Bakken, 81, died Friday, April 17, 2009, at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston, MN, two weeks after he moved there.
Lowell Leroy Bakken was born on June 20, 1927, in Rosebud Township, rural Fosston, MN, the son of Louis and Amanda (Olson) Bakken. He grew up in rural Fosston and attended school at Moen Elementary and Fosston High School, obtaining his graduation diploma in 2002.
He joined the U.S. Navy as a 17-year old, serving in the South Pacific from April 1945 to July 1946. On October 6, 1946, he was married to Ruby Deloris Olson at Poplar Lake Church, rural Fosston. He did farm work until moving with his family to Crookston in 1951 to work for the Polk County Highway Department. He was a survey chief and road design technician for the highway department until his retirement in March 1985. After retirement, Lowell worked road construction and did general surveying for R.J. Zavoral & Sons of East Grand Forks, Widseth, Smith and Nolting of Crookston, and various townships.
He enjoyed hunting, as well as fishing, bowling and camping with his beloved Ruby, who died on May 1, 2006. Lowell was an avid fan of Minnesota Gophers sports teams, as well as the Twins and the Wild. He enjoyed reading and doing jumbles and crosswords in the daily newspaper. Lowell was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where he served as a treasurer and trustee.
He is survived by daughters Carol (Loren) Johnson, Crookston, MN and Catherine (Jack) Bell, Laurel, MT; sons Dale (Cielito) Bakken, Fargo, ND, Ryan (Chris) Bakken, Thompson, ND and Paul (Charlow) Bakken, Crookston; sisters Lorraine Svedahl, Fosston, MN and Linda (Harvey) Jorgenson, Erskine, MN; brothers Marvin (Harriet) Bakken, Breckenridge, MN and Irving (Doria) Bakken, Frazee, MN; grandchildren Chad (Dana) Johnson, Tiffany Bell, Megan Bell, Jonathan Bakken, Elizabeth Bakken, Allison (Matt) Reck, Andrea Bakken and Jacob Bakken; step-grandchildren Kevin (Christen) Munn, Anthony (Shannon) Munn, Aaron Munn, Cecilia Abelar Gil and Isabel Abelar; great-grandchildren Brandon, Ian and Zach Johnson and Christian Bakken; and step great-grandchildren Korben Munn, Parker Munn, and Sofia, Paula and Martin Gil Abelar.
Lowell was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ruby; brother Allen Bakken; sister-in-law Ardelle Anderson; and brothers-in-law Manfred Svedahl, Alf Anderson and Chester Olson.
The funeral service for Lowell Bakken will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2009, in St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Crookston, with the Rev. Bill Reck, officiating.
Military Honors will be provided by the Crookston Veterans Council.
Visitation will be at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home from 4:00-6:00 p.m. Tuesday, with a 6:00 p.m. prayer service, and at the church for one hour before the funeral Wednesday.
Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston.
