Melethime “Millie” O. Arel, 97, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away Thursday, March 19, 2009, in Valley Eldercare Center in Grand Forks.
Melethime Olympia Lessard was born September 1, 1911, in Crookston, MN, the daughter of Philimon and Mary Louise (Clement) Lessard. She attended school in Crookston and upon the completion of her education worked in the Crookston area. Millie married Lawrence J. Arel on September 18, 1933, in St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Crookston. Following their marriage, they lived in Rosseau, MN and Grafton ND before moving to Grand Forks in 1941. She was employed in domestic work and later as a cook with the St. Michael’s School Hot Lunch Program retiring after 25 years. She was known for her bread baking and embroidered towels. She was an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church until 1986. Lawrence preceded her in death on March 21, 1970.
She is survived by her sons, Jerry, Park River, ND, Dale (Judy), Grand Forks, Jean (Sheila), Whapeton, ND; daughters, Yvonne Kreis, Glen Ellyn, IL, Margaret Kendall, Minot, ND; twenty grandchildren; thirty four great-grandchildren and one great great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; a brother, Clement; sisters, Melina Arel and Annette Plante.
Mass of Christian Burial: 1:30 p.m., Monday, March 23, 2009, in Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND.
Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a 4:30 p.m. Rosary Service and 7:00 p.m. vigil service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, 2970 S. Washington St. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Monday.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks, ND, in the spring.
