Gladys Haarstad, 100, of Crookston, MN, formerly of Newfolden, MN, died Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Villa St. Vincent Nursing Center, Crookston, MN.
Gladys Clarice Risteigen was born May 10, 1908 at Oslo, MN the daughter of Thorsten and Thora (Thorstenson) Risteigen. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended and graduated from Oslo High School and Mayville ND Teachers Training.
She was united in marriage to Hans Haarstad on March 9, 1935 in Viking, MN. The couple farmed in Marsh Grove and Foldahl Townships, Marshall County, MN until they retired in 1970, when they moved into Newfolden, MN. Hans passed away April 12, 1987, and she continued to reside there until January of 1997, when she moved into Valley Home, Thief River Falls, MN and in November of 2002 to the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston, MN.
She was a longtime member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in rural Newfolden where she taught Sunday School, and was active in Ladies Aid and was an Honorary member of ALCW. She made many quilts for her family and church missions. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and spending time outdoors, especially fishing.
She will be lovingly missed by her family of two daughters and sons-in-laws: Claudette (Winton) Forsberg of Thief River Falls, MN, Claudia (Dennis) Cirks of Crookston, MN, 5 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren, sister Ruth Liedber of Goodridge, MN and brother A.W. (Peggy) Risteigen of Oslo, MN, and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, infant granddaughter Kristi Cirks, brothers Halvor, Norman, and Rueben, sisters Helen Lofthus, Thelma Liedberg, and Alpha Liedberg, and brothers-in-law Harold Lofthus, Harry Lofthus, Elmer Liedberg and Norman Liedberg.
Services: 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 2, 2009 at the New Hope Lutheran Church, Newfolden, MN.
Visitation: 1 hour before services at the church.
Burial: Bethesda Cemetery, Rural Newfolden, MN.
