Beth Siverhus of Warroad, Minn., photographed this great gray owl in flight recently in Roseau County of northwest Minnesota near the Manitoba border. The large owls, which typically reside in Canada, wandered south in noticeable numbers for awhile earlier, this winter in search of food. The phenomenon is known in bird circles as an irruption.
