Former North Dakota Gov. Bill Guy, center, went to Vietnam in 1967 as an election observer at the request of President Lyndon Johnson. He narrowly avoided being killed or injured in a bombing due to a schedule delay. "The bomb was definitely meant for us," he said in a Sept. 4, 1967, Chicago Tribune story.
