Facing Mecca, Abdi Takal and his sons, Abdirahman, in the kofi, and Hassen, do individual prayers in preparing for the collective Friday prayers of the Islamic Community of Grand Forks which is buying the building which the United Church of Christ has owned for 40 years on 17th Avenue South near Red River High School.
The community’s Muslim population has grown to about 400, its members say, and having a building will give them space for not only prayer and worship, but community and social events. The UCC congregation will continue to rent space for Sunday worship. For more than a decade, Muslims have held Friday prayers in the Lotus Meditation Center on UND’s campus.
