Ribs carved from cedar and formed by bending them over a knee give shape to Talon Stammen’s birch bark canoe. Cedar sheathing below the ribs provide additional strength. Lacing made from spruce roots stitches the materials together, and pitch heated and mixed with charcoal and bear grease is used to seal the seams. (Brad Dokken photo)
