Talon Stammen of Grand Forks read extensively and took a course at the North House Folk School in Grand Marais, Minn., before building his birch bark canoe last summer at the family cabin on the Northwest Angle. Besides harvesting birch bark for the hull, Stammen used traditional tools to carve the thwarts, which extend across the canoe, from black ash and the ribs and sheathing from cedar. He used black spruce roots for lacing to stitch the materials together. Stammen graduates today from Red River High School. (Brad Dokken photo)
