Homestead sod house

Loree Hoverson, left, and her mom, Donna Jean Verwest, hold the iconic photograph of a sod house in western Walsh County, taken by photographer John McCarthy in 1898, and later purchased by Verwest's father, pioneer photographer Fred Hultstrand of Park River, ND, along with McCarthy's studio. An adaptation of the photograph became the Homestead Act centennial stamp fifty years ago. Herald photo by Eric Hylden.
