Mexician archivist rides river

Community activist Marciano Cruz, 63, rides on a raft in the Papagayo River, near the town of Agua Caliente, about 40 miles from Acapulco, Mexico, on July 29, 2011. In 2003, crews with heavy machinery cut through village fences, crops and trees to build La Parota dam. For the Mexican Federal Electricity Commission, the three dozen destitute villages tucked along lagoons and down winding muddy roads beyond the luxury resorts of Acapulco would just have to be swallowed up. But this was the same year Mexico's groundbreaking freedom of information, and - using documents obtained under the new law - they stopped the dam. (AP Photo/Bernandino Hernandez)
