Coyotes in North Dakota have become increasingly abundant the past 20 years, much to the dismay of livestock producers and some deer hunters, who blame the animals for the recent decline in deer populations. Two bills in the North Dakota Legislature propose to offer bounties on the coyotes, but the Game and Fish Department opposes the idea, saying bounties don’t work. Game and Fish biologists say coyotes take a few deer, but the recent decline largely results from an aggressive hunting strategy to increase the deer kill and reduce the herd size. That was by design, the department says, and that’s why deer numbers are down. (N.D. Game and Fish Department photo)
